Our organization, Operation Change was made for the Aspen Challenge program. Our team consists of Ahijah Coleman, Nevaeh Tate, James Williams, Jason Gore, London Adams,
Saniyya Todd, Alex Warren, Rishard Davis, and our coaches, Amanda Rene Buchanan and Hannah Bunis. Our mission is to create a community that is environmentally conscious, aware of its individual impact on climate change, and takes action. To do this, we have taken many approaches. In our school, Julius Rosenwald High School, we have created a slideshow to show to the students in the morning. The slideshow is used to present facts about climate change. Presenting this slideshow raised awareness to the students of our High School. To help raise awareness in another way, we set up a table outside of our lunchroom. At this table, we created goodie bags to place their. These goodie bags had a card on them that showed why climate change should be stopped, and how it can be stopped. In these goodie bags as well, was a snack and a water-flavoring packet. We encouraged students to use the water-flavoring in re-usable water bottles. We also set up a lunch-and-learn. A lunch-and-learn is a reserved time during lunch when students can go to our Media-Center and learn about our mission. At this lunch-and-learn, we gave at reusable water bottles to help reduce the amount of plastic that is consumed by our students. The Operation Change team set up bright, colorful, recycling boxes around the school. We set these next to trash bins with signs above them, reading, RE-CYCLE HERE, PLASTIC ONLY. After about one week, we picked up the plastic in the boxes and tallied the amount of plastic by the fluid oz per bottle. After the next week, we picked the boxes up again. We ended up having way more bottles picked up than expected after we had done everything else. Our mission was a success. |
